Objectives To deliver a proposed method for the deployment of a temporary oil containment storage facility (temporary is defined as up to 5 years) that will give National Grid a greater degree of flexibility in the delivery of transformer replacement schemes. Installed temporary bund Decision on whether temporary bund is fit for purpose/application in National Grid
Abstract National Grid have a requirement to store a transformer for a short period in a temporary storage bund as opposed to a traditional concrete bund. There is no current market solution suitable for this requirement. Construct a temporary containment solution. The solution will comprise of a geo-membrane sheet that is supported by a pre-stressed metal frame. The filtration system will utilise Filtrelec Petro-Pipe units which on detection of hydrocarbons block, effectively acting as a plug. In the event of the filters blocking, a siphon is also connected to the bund that allows the water at the bottom of the bund to drain whilst leaving oil in the bund. The entire solution will be erected around a spare transformer before it is filled with oil. Once the bund is fully erected it will be trialled for a short period to monitor performance and allow National Grid to establish whether it is fit for purpose.Note : Project Documents may be available via the ENA Smarter Networks Portal using the Website link above
